CHARLESTON, S.C. — B.J. Myers pitched five-hit ball over eight scoreless innings and West Virginia got key hits from the bottom of its order to defeat Charleston Southern 3-0 on Sunday in the rubber-game of an opening-weekend series.
Blake Smith pitched a perfect ninth in relief of Myers (1-0), who struck out five, walked one and scattered five singles. The sophomore coaxed groundball double plays in the fourth and seventh innings and was fortunate on a line-drive double play that erased Nate Blanchard’s leadoff single in the first.
Myers, 2-5 with a 3.85 ERA last season, allowed only one runner to reach scoring position.
