West Virginia Mountaineer linebacker Brendan Ferns announced today via Twitter that he was retiring from football after accepting a medical scholarship. Ferns, who was one of the top recruits for former head coach Dana Holgorsen only appeared in 8 games after suffering a multitude of injuries.
Ferns was a four-star linebacker coming out of high school in St. Clairesville, Ohio. Ferns was injured his knee in practice in 2016 before his freshman year where he was lost for the season. He then injured his shoulder in 2017 and missed most of the season.
This was a tough decision, but I have accepted a medical scholarship and will not be able to play my final two years here at WVU.
