Gold & Blue Lunch: Baylor hands reins to freshman QB

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — For once Baylor actually needed Seth Russell during the fourth quarter, and it may have produced a serious injury.

The nation’s top-rated quarterback suffered a fractured bone in his neck while being tackled on a 4-yard run with about 6 minutes left in Saturday’s 45-27 win over Iowa State. The No. 2-ranked Bears led 35-20 and were struggling through a mushy second-half when the injury occurred.

That leaves the chase for a College Football Playoff berth up to Jarrett Stidham—the pride of Stephenville High and the true freshman with a passer-efficiency rating that actually dwarfs Russell’s (though not enough attempts to qualify).
