Donato’s gem implodes; Furman takes opener 7-3

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Unable to touch Chad Donato of five innings, Furman exploded for a five-run sixth and beat West Virginia 7-3 in the series opener Friday night at Monongalia County Ballpark.

Donato looked unhittable at times while striking out 13 batters, which made it more stunning when the Paladins (12-17) strung together six hits in their big inning.

The Mountaineers (16-12) answered with two in the bottom half, but that was all Furman’s Will Gaddis (5-2) allowed over eight innings. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

“This was a matter of their guy with the ball in his hand controlling the game,” West Virginia coach Randy Mazey said.
