Cost of attendance stipends give scholarship student-athletes a little financial freedom

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — LaVar Arrington used to look forward to the occasional drive away from campus, down State College’s North Atherton Street to Wendy’s for his go-to meal.

“I loved to get two junior bacon cheeseburgers, a cup of chili, some French fries and a Frosty,” Arrington said in a phone interview. “Doesn’t that sound good?”

During his All-America career at Penn State, Arrington collected $400 per month, money his family received because his father was a disabled Vietnam Veteran. That money helped Arrington pay for the occasional costs his full scholarship didn’t cover, such as the trips to Wendy’s and other basic needs.
