KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Stunned by two TCU goals in the first half, the No. 1-ranked West Virginia women showed they could play catchup to win the Big 12 tournament championship.
Kadeisha Buchanan tied the match with 1:43 left in regulation before Ashley Lawrence delivered the golden goal in the 97th minute to cap Sunday’s 3-2 thriller that left Mountaineers coach Nikki Izzo-Brown breathless.
“This is all just surreal right now,” she said. “All the credit to our seniors. They all stepped up tonight. It was all just incredible. What a great championship.”
Buchanan earned the tournament’s defensive MVP and Lawrence took the offensive award as West Virginia (19-1-1) earned the Big 12’s automatic NCAA bid despite allowing its first goal since Sept.
