Ten student-athletes were already in the fold before today’s activities got underway this morning at 7:18 a.m. when Ligonier Valley (Pa.) High safety Collin Smith faxed in his letter.
The rest were on board before we had even digested our breakfast.
“For the Mountaineers, we signed half of our class today and half of our class in December,” West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said. “Get used to it because that’s just the way this is going to be.”
Here is the breakdown of this year’s class, including the December signees:
* 21 total players
* 10 mid-year enrollees
* 13 high school players
* Eight junior college players
* 13 different states represented with Pennsylvania leading the way with four, followed by three prospects from Georgia
* Three players from West Virginia, including legacy recruits Maverick Wolfey (son of former Mountaineer standout Dale Wolfey) and Darius Stills (son of former WVU and NFL linebacker Gary Stills)
* Two players from Florida, continuing West Virginia’s long streak of landing Sunshine State players
* Nine offensive players
* 12 defensive players
Based recruiting stars, South Charleston safety Derrek Pitts is the most coveted prospect in this year’s class.
