1954 Sugar Bowl starter Jack Stone dies at age 88

LOGAN, W.Va. — WVU three-year letterman and 1954 Sugar Bowl team member Jack Stone died Wednesday at age 88.

Stone was a starter at multiple positions (halfback and defensive back) on the Mountaineers’ Sugar Bowl squad. He was also a kicker and kick returner. In his three-year career, Stone racked up 1,058 yards of total offense with twelve touchdowns. The Mount Hope, W.Va. native also excelled as a punt returner, averaging 18.8 yards per return. Stone was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1954 NFL Draft.

Following his graduation from WVU, Stone enlisted in the United States Army, serving during the Korean War from 1954-1956.
