It might have been an up-and-down year for WVU, but the Mountaineers can still end on a high note. The Mountaineers can expect to land an interesting SEC opponent in the Liberty Bowl (with Texas likely headed to the Texas Bowl, they're a virtual lock at this point)...let's take a look at the possible competition:
Arkansas (6-6)
The Razorbacks aren't the most appealing opponent in the SEC, but of the eligible opponents out there, they might be WVU's best chance at a win. The Razorbacks are a good defensive team that struggles putting points on the board, and that bodes well for a WVU squad that has only failed to score 30 points in three of their 12 games this season. This would be the first ever meeting between these two schools.
LSU (8-4)
It's hard to get a read on where the Tigers are headed - some projections have them facing off with Texas in the Texas Bowl, while others have them in the TaxSlayer or the Music City. We think there's a solid chance the Tigers end up in the Liberty Bowl, though, if Tennessee ends up in the Music City. The current LSU team has been largely carried by the defense and the running game, and it'll be up to Clint Trickett and the Mountaineers to find a way through their clever schemes. LSU is 2-0 against WVU all time, with the Mountaineers on the wrong side of a 47-21 blowout in their last matchup back in 2011.
Tennessee (6-6)
Butch Jones and the Vols have also had a tough year (largely thanks to a punishing schedule that didn't do their young team any favors), but they'll never have trouble finding a bowl game - both the Liberty and the Music City are played in their home state, and both are interested in hosting them as long as they're eligible. The Vols would be a great opponent from a matchup standpoint, but the idea of playing your bowl game on the road (which would no doubt be the case if the Vols end up playing WVU in the Liberty) isn't ideal.
