West Ham's EFL Cup victory over Accrington Stanley was a sterile, tepid affair devoid of class. That was until the sixth minute of injury time, when Dimitri Payet provided one moment of it to give the Hammers a narrow 1-0 victory over their League Two opponents.
Accrington and their supporters acquitted themselves well and can be happy with their first ever visit to east London, but they rarely threatened an upset. In a dogged defensive display, Stanley's best hope of getting a result eventually loomed in the closing minutes. When Arthur Masuaku was carried off late in the game, Slaven Bilic had already utilised West Ham's three substitutes.
