Karren Brady’s ban from the men-only boardroom at Notts County when she was managing director of Birmingham City is often cited as one of the worst examples of sexist behaviour in football.
But widespread accounts of the 1994 incident between former Notts chairman Derek Pavis and Brady, now a baroness and vice-chairman of West Ham, are challenged in a book published this week charting 50 years of Meadow Lane history written by lifelong County fan Paul Mace.
Pavis claims in One Flew Over the Magpies Nest that he had words with Brady after she had allegedly smuggled out a drink from the bar for her then boyfriend and future husband Paul Peschisolido, but she was never banned.
