Sam Allardyce's desire for something different in his first England squad was clear when it was revealed that he had attempted to select French-born midfielder Steven N'Zonzi, formerly of Blackburn and now at Sevilla.
The fact that N'Zonzi played for France's under-21 team before he became eligible for England via residency meant he could not be selected. But Allardyce did spring a few surprises ahead of next Sunday's World Cup qualifying match against Slovakia.
