West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Pulis has made Everton midfielder James McCarthy his number one target for January.
Pulis tried and failed to sign the Republic of Ireland international last summer but is ready to revive his efforts in the unsettled 26-year-old and is lining up a £15million bid.
Pulis has considered Morgan Schneiderlin at Manchester United but he is among one of the names on Everton's list and ironically could replace McCarthy at Goodison should he be sold.
Everton want to overhaul their squad with McCarthy, Tom Cleverley, Oumar Niasse and other fringe players all likely to be made available.
