For a player producing some of the best attacking statistics in Europe, it is curious to hear Matt Phillips confess to grapples with low confidence.
He does not seem short on self-belief when shifting his powerful frame down the wing at speed to deliver crosses or try shots, as he has done for West Bromwich Albion numerous times this season.
He admits though that underneath resides a psychological tussle which has punctuated his career. He knows he possesses talent but, having risen from League Two to Premier League, has been uncertain of the level. Internal pressure to do well has followed and that, he says, would lead to his 'downfall'.
