ONE of the most famous Christmas games of all time, the Throstles went up to Old Trafford and won 5-3 in a game fortunately caught for posterity by the television cameras.
A thrilling game went from end to end but Albion came out on top thanks to two from Tony Brown, the “Goal of the Season” from Len Cantello, and other crackers from Laurie Cunningham and Cyrille Regis.
Had the United goalkeeper Gary Bailey not been in such outstanding form, the scoreline could have been even greater, but the fact that Tony Brown scored past him meant that he completed the rare double of scoring goals past father and son – he scored past Gary’s dad Roy when he played for Ipswich in the 1960s.
