Aston Villa started life without Jack Grealish with a disappointing defeat after being comfortably beaten by newly promoted Watford.
The Hornets built a 3-0 lead inside 67 minutes, with goals from Emmanuel Dennis, Ismaila Sarr and Juan Hernandez all getting on the score sheet.
John McGinn grabbed a consolation goal with 20 minutes to play but Villa were unable to use the strike to build any sort of momentum to launch a late rally, despite Danny Ings netting a penalty deep into stoppage time.
