Staff at Manchester United were reportedly 'gutted' by Michael Carrick's decision to step aside and not join Ralf Rangnick's coaching team.
The former England international was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's assistant and was handed the job of caretaker manager after the Norwegian was sacked last month following a 4-1 defeat at Watford.
In his temporary role, Carrick led United to a crucial win in Villarreal that secured top spot in their Champions League group, before picking up a creditable draw at Stamford Bridge and beating Arsenal at Old Trafford.
The latter game proved to be Carrick's last as a United employee, as he left the club prior to Rangnick's arrival.
