Adrian Mariappa opens up on £10,000 loan to Troy Deeney when Watford star was in prison: 'It's what you do for someone you care about'

Watford defender Adrian Mariappa has revealed he loaned team-mate Troy Deeney £10,000 to support his family when the striker was in prison — and said it's 'what you do for someone you care about'.

Hornets captain Deeney served three months of a 10-month sentence in 2012 for his involvement in a brawl with students in Birmingham.

The Vicarage Road club suspended the striker's wages during his stint behind bars and Mariappa stepped in to help support his friend's partner Stacey and son Myles.
