The Washington Wizards have been planning to make a run at Kevin Durant for years.
They began clearing cap room for a max level free agent two years ago by signing players who will come off the books once the hometown hero becomes an unrestricted free agent. Ernie Grunfeld continued to trade for players with contracts that wouldn’t hinder their chances and signed numerous players to expiring deals this past summer.
With the cap space cleared, the Wizards then began adding people to the team who are familiar with Durant.
First, they signed his high school coach, David Adkins, as a player development trainer.
