Russell M. Nelson, president of the 16.8 million-member Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will lead Aug. 14 ceremonies rededicating the group’s temple in Kensington, Maryland, the church said Wednesday.
The temple was the first LDS temple to be built on the East Coast of the United States, and its 1974 dedication was led by then-president Spencer W. Kimball. The church said it closed the temple in 2018 for mechanical and electrical systems renovations, as well as to refresh finishes, and furnishings in the 160,000-square-foot facility.
The announcement noted that lockdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic postponed the originally scheduled December 2020 rededication date.
