Governmental efforts to restrict TikTok have spread to Congress.
Bills introduced in the House and Senate on Tuesday would block all transactions from TikTok and other social media companies under the influence of China, as well as social media platforms linked to Russia, Iran, North Korea, Cuba and Venezuela.
The legislation was introduced with bipartisan support. Rep. Mike Gallagher, Wisconsin Republican, teamed with Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, Illinois Democrat, on the House legislation. Sen. Marco Rubio, Florida Republican, introduced the companion legislation in the Senate.
Mr. Gallagher called TikTok “digital fentanyl.” He said it addicts Americans, censors news and collects people’s data.
