Powerful Republicans plan to use “every remedy available” to block a D.C. crime overhaul that reduces maximum sentences for gun offenses, carjackings and robberies, marking another skirmish in a long-running war over “home rule.”
The GOP pledge coincides with rising crime concerns in the capital and is another sign the new House majority will flex its constitutional right to oversee the District, a power that has upended abortion and marijuana programs in the city and fueled its pursuit of statehood.
Republicans earlier this month also filed a disapproval resolution to block a D.C. measure that would allow non-citizens to vote in local elections.
