Wildfire near Lake Chelan quadruples

The Wolverine Creek Fire near Lake Chelan has quadrupled in size since Friday, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

“Last night air temperatures in [the] area were very high and the relative humidity was very low, causing extreme fire behavior,” Carly Reed, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Forest Service Chelan-Entiat Ranger District, said in an emailed statement Saturday. “The fire moved direction and moved quicker than it has in the past.”

The fire, which started at the end of June with a lightning strike in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, grew from about 1,500 acres Friday to 6,000 acres by Saturday afternoon.
