Cougars shut down everything except runs by Cardinal quarterback Kevin Hogan
PULLMAN — Washington State defensive coordinator Alex Grinch devised a masterful game plan to shut down No. 8 Stanford’s bruising offense, and for most of Saturday night the Cougars stuck to the script and almost conducted a clinic on how to stop Heisman Trophy candidate running back Christian McCaffrey.
Still, it was not enough as Stanford came away with a 30-28 victory when WSU’s Erik Powell missed a 43-yard field goal as time ran out.
McCaffrey came into the game averaging 136.1 rushing yards a game.
