Hospital infections partly caused by understaffing

Annemarie Flood encouraged hospital patients to request a “clean” hospital room to help prevent infections [“Consumer Reports: Seattle area hospitals get low marks for stopping infections,” [News, July 29]. As a housekeeper at Swedish Medical Center, I’m one of the people who cleans those rooms.

In the past few years, the number of patient rooms we are required to clean each shift has doubled. That means I don’t have the same amount of time to carefully, thoroughly do my job. We have not received training in how to sanitize nor given proper protection. While I make every effort to do my best, the short staffing can mean cutting corners or patients having to wait for rooms.
