SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Jared McAlvey (400m hurdles) and Louie Hinchliffe (100m dash) each posted top-three finishes to automatically qualify for Friday's quarterfinal rounds in their respective events as Washington State men's track and field opened the 2023 NCAA West Preliminary Round Wednesday at Hornet Stadium.
Hinchliffe closed his first-career race at the NCAA West Preliminary with a strong final push to narrowly edge out USC's Brendon Stewart for the third and final automatic qualifying spot in the opening heat at an official time of 10.31.
McAlvey was out in front of his 400m hurdles heat from start to finish as the junior from Walla Walla cruised to his first-career trip to the national quarterfinal round with a time of 51.
