PULLMAN, Wash. (Feb. 18, 2025) -- Washington State freshman Evans Kurui was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Kurui, from Eldorat, Kenya, broke Washington State's 49-year-old 5000-meter indoor record last Friday in Seattle at the Husky Classic. Kurui became the fastest 5000-meter indoor runner in program history, setting a personal best time of 13:17.16. The time was nearly 17 seconds faster than the previous record holder, 7-time, NCAA champion John Ngeno, who set the record in 1976, until last Friday the oldest standing indoor record at WSU.
