PULLMAN, Wash. – Senior Melisa Ates provided the bright spot for Washington State as the No. 47 Cougars fell to No. 6 UCLA, 6-1, Friday afternoon in the Pac-12 Conference tennis opener for both teams.
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 5-5 on the season, 0-1 in Pac-12 play. UCLA improves to 7-2, 1-0.
Ates, playing at No. 6, jumped out strong, taking the first set 6-3 against Taylor Johnson. The two went back and forth in the second until a late break by Johnson forced a third set. With the overall team outcome decided, a 10-point tiebreaker was played to decide the match.
