Runner Bernard Lagat might be WSU's most accomplished athlete. He is the winner of two Olympic medals as well the U.S. record holder in the 1500, 3000 and 5000 meters. He is also at 5-time world champion in distance events. This is after he won three NCAA championships as a collegian at Washington State.
Sadly, Lagat did not qualify for the world championships this year. He finished in tenth place at the U.S. Outdoor championships in Eugene in June. At age 40, this could be the end of Lagat's reign of America's pre-eminent distance runner.
Lagat has not given up and is still planning to race this summer in Europe and hasn't ruled out a run at qualifying for the 2016 Olympics in Rio according to Runner's World.
