Central District crosswalks marked with colors of Pan-African flag

A few crosswalks in the Central Area have been painted with red, black and green horizontal stripes, colors said to represent the Pan-African flag.

The new paint reportedly appeared after Umoja Fest last weekend — more than a month after the city unveiled 11 rainbow crosswalks on Capitol Hill to celebrate gay pride.

The city’s Department of Transportation is reviewing the newly-painted crosswalks and determining what action city authorities should take.

In June, Murray said the city is looking for ways beyond the Capitol Hill project to mark the character of other neighborhoods. The city used $66,000 in fees dedicated to development to cover the cost of the rainbow project.
