Amy Helm’s debut feels like home | New recordings

Amy Helm’s debut solo album, “Didn’t It Rain,” feels like a certain kind of home — familiar and happy.

Its inviting nature derives largely from Helm’s clear, elastic voice that immediately grabs your attention on the funky title track. If she had decided to make an album full of these upbeat hip-shakers, no one would have complained, but Helm — the daughter of The Band’s Levon Helm — isn’t content to stay within one genre.

“Rescue Me” sounds like something coming out of the singer-songwriter contingent in Nashville, while “Spend Our Last Dime” is driven by Telecaster twang and barroom piano.
