Davey Martinez announced on Saturday that Luis Avilán, who’d gone on the 10-Day IL with inflammation in his elbow on Friday, was diagnosed with a torn UCL and was weighing his options before deciding if he would have Tommy John surgery.
On Monday, Martinez said the 31-year-old reliever, who signed a minor-league contract with salary of $950K in majors this winter, made his decision.
“I talked to him today and he’s going to have surgery, so they’re going to schedule that,” the manager said.
“Decided to have the surgery.
