Davey Martinez and the Nationals’ made the decision to let the manager choose his own coaches now that he has a long-term deal in the nation’s capital, parting ways with pitching coach Paul Menhart, Chip Hale, who served as his bench coach in 2018-2019 and moved to third base in 2020, and Kevin Long, the Nats’ hitting coach for each of Martinez’s first three seasons on the bench in Washington, earlier this month.
Menhart, as quoted by Washington Post writer Barry Svrluga, said he learned, “when I spoke to [General Manager Mike Rizzo] that it was up to Davey to pick his own staff.
