WASHINGTON -- Members of Major League Baseball and the Nationals showed their support for those affected by the tragedy that shook Washington on Wednesday morning, when a man began firing gunshots at a park in Alexandria, Va., while Republican members of Congress held a morning baseball practice.
Five people were wounded in the shooting, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise from Louisiana, who was in critical condition as of Wednesday afternoon. The gunman, James T. Hodgkinson III, died after a shootout with police.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Representative Steve Scalise, Congressional staff, U.S. Capitol Police and all those who were impacted by today's senseless violence at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia," MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement.
