Scherzer tosses 4 2/3 in spring debut

Garcia also made a pair of terrific defensive plays after drawing the start at short.

Scherzer, who has been slowed this spring by a stress fracture in his right ring finger, threw 73 pitches (49 strikes) before being relieved by Joe Nathan. Scherzer was charged with two runs on five hits and one walk. He struck out four.

The Cardinals took advantage of his departure by tagging Nathan for a pair of runs before he could garner the final out of the fifth. Carpenter added a two-run triple in the seventh. The top three hitters in the Cardinals' starting lineup -- Dexter Fowler, Garcia and Carpenter -- combined for six hits, six RBIs and three runs scored.
