Scherzer no-hits Pirates, loses perfect game in 9th

When it didn’t happen six days ago, when Carlos Gomez’s broken-bat blooper fell to the ground just beyond Anthony Rendon’s outstretched glove in the seventh inning in Milwaukee, Max Scherzer could only shrug off his bad luck and wonder if he’d ever get another chance like that to pitch a perfect game.

How could Scherzer, or anyone else for that matter, assume the opportunity would present itself again only six days later? Or that this time, the Nationals ace would come within one out of finishing what he started but still author one of the greatest pitching performance in Washington baseball history?
