WASHINGTON -- The crowd at Nationals Park clapped and chanted along, "Let's go, Max! Let's go, Max!" They hung on every pitch as they sensed it was near. Max Scherzer pitched himself into the history books once again with another dominant performance in the Nationals' 9-4 victory over the Marlins on Tuesday night.
Scherzer recorded his 300th strikeout of the season in the seventh, fanning Marlins outfielder Austin Dean with a slider after a 10-pitch battle. Scherzer became just the sixth pitcher since 1990 to record 300 strikeouts in a single season, joining Curt Schilling, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Clayton Kershaw and Chris Sale.
