Nearly every young ballplayer has a moment when he questions whether he’s ever going to make it to the major leagues, especially those drafted in later rounds who toil in the minors for awhile.
It’s probably safe to say no ballplayer besides Mitch Harris has ever experienced that moment while stationed on an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf. Which made Harris’ moment Monday night, when the 29-year-old reliever was told the Cardinals were calling him up to make his big-league debut in Washington, particularly special.
“Yes, there were times when I doubted it,” he said Tuesday afternoon in the press conference room at Nationals Park.
