Stephen Strasburg got off to a rocky start against Pittsburgh’s Pirates on Wednesday night in Washington, D.C., giving up back-to-back, one-out singles that put runners on first and second. He got a grounder out of Josh Bell for what looked like at least a force at second in the next at bat, but Nationals’ shortstop Trea Turner’s throw didn’t get to first in time for a double play.
Pirates’ skipper Clint Hurdle called for a review, however, and it turned out that Turner lifted his foot off the bag before receiving the throw from Howie Kendrick, and after a review of a so-called “neighborhood” play, the call on the field was overturned, and an E:6 on a missed catch error resulted in a bases-loaded, one-out jam.
