Washington Nationals fans will have to say a bittersweet “goodbye” to at least one of the key players from their first World Series championship.
Nationals managing principal owner Mark Lerner said in an interview with NBC Sports Washington’s “The Donald Dell Interview” that between starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg and third baseman Anthony Rendon, the team only can afford to bring back one of its two marquee free agents.
“We really can only afford to have one of those two guys,” Lerner said. “They’re huge numbers. We already have a really large payroll to begin with.
