Amid speculation that the Washington Nationals will make a strong push for bullpen help, general manager Mike Rizzo hints the NL East leaders could play it safe as the trade deadline approaches.
“I don’t sense any need,” Rizzo told Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post on Sunday. “That’s not to say that we’re a perfect team and we couldn’t upgrade if the right possibility comes.”
While the Nationals have generally avoided adding significant salary in July, Rizzo broke from that mold last summer when he added reliever Jonathan Papelbon in a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies.
