Speaking at a press conference on Monday, following the Washington Nationals’ final home game of the season, general manager Matt Rizzo insisted that the decision to retain Matt Williams as the team’s manager will be made after the season.
“We’re going to make the 2016 decisions after we finish 2015,” Rizzo said. “He’s under contract to be the manager next year.”
It has long been assumed that Williams will not return to the Nationals next season. Williams, the National League Manager of the Year in 2014, his first as a major-league manager, has guided the Nationals to an 81-78 record with a three-game homestand at the New York Mets, the NL East champion, set to begin on Friday.
