Lopes returns to Nats as Baker’s first base coach

The Nationals added another high-profile coach to Dusty Baker’s staff Thursday morning, bringing Davey Lopes back to serve in the first base coaching position he held in D.C. a decade ago.

Lopes, 70, is one of the sport’s most experienced and respected coaches, particularly as a baserunning instructor. He spent the last five seasons as the Dodgers’ first base coach and prior to that held the position with the Phillies, becoming a favorite of Jayson Werth, who is now reunited with him.

This will be Lopes’ second stint with the Nationals; he was Frank Robinson’s first base coach in 2006 and was popular among players for the work he did that season.
