Nationals catcher Kurt Suzuki defended his decision to wear a red “Make America Great Again” hat during his team’s visit at the White House.
President Trump called Suzuki up to the lectern Monday and the 36-year-old put on the cap — causing some in attendance to laugh. President Trump bear-hugged Suzuki from behind as Suzuki then said, “I love you all. I love you all” to the crowd of 5,300.
But Suzuki faced criticism for donning the hat, with one Twitter user saying: “Kurt Suzuki is officially canceled.”
“Everybody makes everything political,” Suzuki said in a text to USA Today.
