In their first offseason as the Washington Nationals, they went out and signed free agent starting pitcher Esteban Loaiza to a one-year deal worth $2.9 million. Loaiza fit a need for the Nats at the time because he could eat innings. In 2004, as the Montreal Expos, the starters threw the fewest innings of any team in the National League.
