1B umpire Layne exits in second inning

MIAMI -- First-base umpire Jerry Layne was shaken up in the second inning on Tuesday after leaping out of the way of a scorched line drive down the first-base line.

Layne, the crew chief, walked gingerly off the field to be treated, leaving three umpires to handle the Nationals-Marlins game at Marlins Park.

Layne had to move suddenly, leaping away from Daniel Murphy's leadoff double. He made the fair sign as he was landing awkwardly. Second-base umpire Hunter Wendelstedt adjusted to first base, and Scott Barry, the third-base umpire, went back and forth from third base to second, depending on the situation.
