The Washington Nationals today recalled right-handed pitcher Collin Balester from Syracuse of the Triple-A International League. Nationals Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.
Balester went 2-0 with a 3.71 ERA in 13 relief appearances with Syracuse, posting 18 strikeouts in 17.0 innings at Triple-A this season. The 24-year-old has pitched 3.1 innings spanning three appearances with the Nationals in 2011.
In 20 career relief appearances with Washington, Balester is 0-1 with a 3.33 ERA and .207 batting average against. He has posted 11.10 strikeouts per 9.0 innings (30 K/24.1 IP) out of the bullpen.
