The Washington Nationals have been competing for a playoff berth all season, but are still looking for that missing piece at the trade deadline to help them make the postseason. Here are three rumors you need to know:
Washington interested in Ben Zobrist?
The Nationals have been scouting the Oakland Athletics in recent months, according to Jon Morosi of Fos Sports, noting that Washington has been linked to Ben Zobrist recently. Nothing tangible has come of that interest, but it is clear the Nationals would entertain a deal to acquire Zobrist.
Nats interested in D-Backs’ middle infielders
Along with their interest in Zobrist in recent weeks, the team has also expressed interest in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ middle infield depth, according to Jon Morosi of Fox Sports. Arizona has man middle infield options, as Chris Owings, Nick Ahmed, and Cliff Pennington can play both shortstop or second base.
Nationals reluctant to add payroll
According to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal, Nats ownership is reluctant to add payroll during the season. Rosenthal notes that we saw an indication of this last summer when Cleveland paid all of the $3.3 million left on Asdrubal Cabrera‘s salary after the Nats acquired him.
