In Amy Wheeler’s “Wizzer Pizzer: Getting Over the Rainbow,” a disillusioned gay man finds himself in a bizarre reality where an ex-gay, ex-lesbian couple promise the secret to becoming straight. Of course, so-called reparative therapy is unfortunately not relegated to fantasy worlds, even if the logic behind it seems borrowed from a cracked alternate universe.
While gay-to-straight therapy is a ripe target for parody, Wheeler’s unfocused script doesn’t land many punches, preferring to gawk at the sheer ridiculousness of the idea. And though Corey D. McDaniel’s direction smartly tries to emphasize the humanity of the characters, Theatre22’s production at 12th Avenue Arts struggles to compensate for the play’s deficiencies.
