EUGENE, Ore. — About 100 meters from the finish line, stuck behind the leaders in the women’s 800 meter semifinal at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials on Saturday afternoon, UW graduate student Phoebe Wright thought to herself, “Last hurrah. This might be the last time going down the home stretch.”
Not just yet.
The 27-year-old dug in and found her kick to narrowly pass Kendra Chambers at the finish line, clocking 2 minutes, 1.39 seconds to Chambers’ 2:01.46 for fifth place in the heat, her time qualifying her for the last spot in Monday’s finals.
